Genesis: In the Beginning The Promise

delivered by

This story is our story. It’s all connected.

Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves…

Genesis 11: 4 New International Version (NIV)

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth
 will be blessed through you.”

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and lot went with him… Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Genesis 12: 1-4 (NIV)

God’s promise comes with a calling and a journey.
But that journey also comes with lots of waiting and lots of testing.  And through it all, God brings blessing.

By faith Abraham made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country…For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect
and builder is God.

Hebrews 11:9-10 (NIV)

Some time later, God tested Abraham…
God said, “Take your son, your only son,
whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.  Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

Genesis 22:1-3 (NIV)

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also,
along with him, graciously give us all things?

Romans 8:32 (NIV)

This is how God showed his love among us:
He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

1 John 4:9 (NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (NIV)

What is your mountain of testing?
Will you give Him your total trust today?
Will you surrender your life completely to Him?
Instead of trying to make your own way, would you lay it all on the altar to receive all He has for you?
