When You Pray Isn’t it Ironic?

delivered by

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”

John 12:12-15 NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)

Hosanna – “Save now!” or “Save us, we pray!”

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Zechariah 9:9(NIV)

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My father will honor the one who serves me.
Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father,
glorify your name!”

John 12:23-28 (NIV)

Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you,
before the rooster crows, you will
disown me three times!

John 13:38 (NIV)

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of
the Jews?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked,
“or did others talk to you about me?”

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handled you over to me. What is it you have done?”

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.
If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom
is from another place.”

“You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said,
“I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release
‘the king of the Jews’?”

They shouted back, “No, not him!
Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had
taken part in an uprising.

John 18:33-40 (NIV)

“Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,”
the chief priests answered.
Finally Pilate handed him over to them
to be crucified.

John 19:14b-16 (NIV)

…Jesus said, “It is finished.”
With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

John 19:30b (NIV)
