Gaps The Identity Gap

Identity Gap –
Who we are privately and who we are publicly, when it comes to matters of faith.

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Matthew 6:1-4
New International Version (NIV)

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name,’”

Matthew 6:5-9 (NIV)

And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth,
that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father,
who knows what you do in private. And your Father,
who sees everything will reward you.

Matthew 6:16-17 (NIV)

who you are when nobody is looking

who are are when everyone is looking

Whoever acknowledges me before others,
I will also acknowledge before my father in heaven.
But whoever disowns me before others,
I will disown before my Father in heaven.

Matthew 10:32-33 (NIV)
