A Mother’s Request: Matthew 20:20-28

So Jesus got them [the disciples] together to settle things down. He said, “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served — and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.”

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Matthew 28:19-20 New King James Version [NKJV]

Part of what it means to live faithfully as God’s people is to live as one’s sent out into the world, to avail ourselves to God in his ongoing mission and ministry in the world. But here is what I think — Mission is not something we do for God. It is not something we initiate and then invite God to participate in. Mission is what God is already active and at work doing in our world right now. The mission of God is something that we participate in on a daily basis. As we go about our lives at home, at work, at play, on the weekend and in the community of God’s people; our witness together grounds us a witnesses in teh story and the practice of God’s mission.
